PATCH 001: Make sound visible
Sound, visuals, and code in one room. People picked a scene, learned it hands-on, and built live pieces where sound turns into motion and color on screen.

Philly, a DJ set can sound alive while the screen behind it sits still. PATCH 001 started with that problem: the music was alive, but the visuals weren’t.
Everyone came in through one of three scenes. For some, it was their first time in that scene:
- Sound. Drum machines, a DJ controller, and GarageBand. You bring the signal.
- Visuals. Sketching and design on tablets and laptops. You make it move.
- Code. p5.js and the Web Audio API. You wire the sound to the visuals.
Each scene got its own short lesson, then got to building: beats on one laptop, a reactive sketch on the next, where what you hear becomes what you see. People found each other across scenes and formed trios: an engineer, a designer, and a performer. At the end, people showed their work on the big screen.
The visualizer from that night is open source: djVisualizer. PATCH 001 was the first night of the series, and the reason every PATCH since ends with something you made.
Waskar Paulino led the night and taught the code scene. Diego Mendoza-Ramos led the visuals scene and made the photo recap.
